cgallant@medicinehatnews.com@CollinGallant Canadian Tire plans to set up a new Mark’s Work Warehouse outlet in Medicine Hat apart from but near its main southside location. The company announced the plan Tuesday as part of a general announcement that it would take over 10 leases across the country from home retailer Bed Bath and Beyond, which is closing its doors. Of the locations, totalling 242,000 square feet, six are earmarked to become stand-alone Mark’s outlets. They are in Medicine Hat, Grande Prairie, Red Deer and Sherwood Park in Alberta, along with Langley, B.C. and Oakville, Ont. Four others in Ontario will become “Pro Hockey Life” outlets. “Mark’s is continuing to build on its incredible momentum in the Canadian market by strategically relocating six retail spaces to more convenient and larger sites,” said PJ Czank, the president of Mark’s. “These relocated stores will feature more products and deeper assortments of our best brands to meet the needs of our customers in Alberta, British Columbia and Ontario.” Officials with the Medicine Hat location were unavailable Tuesday afternoon. The company moved to its current location near Strachan Road about 10 years ago before redeveloping the former Dunmore Road location to retail space for related brand Sport Chek and Atmosphere outdoor sporting brands. The total consideration to acquire the leases was $1.6 million, according to the Canadian Tire release. The Bed Bath and Beyond location in Medicine Hat is located near Strachan Road in a separate commercial development. 11
