kking@medicinehatnews.com The Medicine Hat Chess Club is hosting its 31st annual Spring Chess Tournament, with the junior section taking place March 25 and the adult section April 1 and 2. The tournament provides chess players of all ages an opportunity to learn and practise their skills in a fun and supportive environment. Prizes will be awarded to winners. Chess Club president Bill Taylor says he is looking forward to the upcoming sections and feels others in the community are also, as demand to participate in the tournament was so great both sections have already reached maximum registration capacity. While opportunity to take part in the tournament has concluded, Taylor welcomes anyone interested in chess to come out as a spectator and cheer players on. “I’m really grateful for the great support (the club has) received over the years,” Taylor told the News. “We’ve received support from probably 200 different sponsors over 30 some years, so the people in the community are very supportive of this endeavour as well as many other endeavours that we run.” The tournament’s junior section takes place at CAPE School March 25, with sign-in from 9:15-9:45 a.m. The adult section is being held April 1 and 2 at 826 11th St. SE in the upstairs room No. 5, accessible via the building’s west entrance. Sign-in is 9-9:30 a.m. For additional information, including future playing opportunities and club events, contact Taylor at bill.taylor@mhchess.com. 10
