Extreme chill in southeast Alberta should lessen some today before temperatures approach the melting point on Saturday, according to the Environment Canada extended forecast.
After a mild start to the new year, a broad trough of arctic air returned to the Prairies this week, with extreme-cold warnings issued for the provinces of Alberta and Saskatchewan, along with southern Manitoba.
Medicine Hat’s short-term forecast called for a low of -30C overnight into Friday with a wind chill of -41C.
That was set to rise to a high of -19C Friday but with a southwest wind and windchill approaching -30C.
The trend for Medicine Hat however, is generally warming with a predicted high on Saturday of 1C and a nighttime low of only -3C.
The U.S. National Weather Service in Great Falls also issued a wind-chill warning through Saturday morning for Hi-line Counties boarding southeast Alberta, but notes the same warning trend and potential for blowing snow as patterns change.
