The population for the census metropolitan area of Medicine Hat hit over 80,000 in the past year. Statistics Canada released new data Wednesday regarding annual demographic estimates and Medicine Hat’s census metropolitan area saw a 1.1 per cent increase from July 1, 2021 to July 1, 2022. The census metropolitan area includes Medicine Hat, Redcliff, Dunmore and stretches north to Hilda, east to Walsh, south past Elkwater and west to Suffield and Ralston. The area’s population grew by 855 people to 80,126, marking the first time since 2013 it has increased by more than 800 people in one year. In contrast, 2021 saw a decrease of 51 people. Across a 10-year period, the metropolitan area population has grown by 15,516 from 64,610 in 2002 to 80,126 in 2022. There were 676 births, 815 deaths, 390 immigrants and 124 emigrants within the metropolitan area in 2021 to 2022. Statistics Canada also released the City of Medicine Hat’s 2022 census population as 65,949, an increase of 553 people since 2021. In 10 years, Medicine Hat’s population has grown by a total of 12,325 people, up from 53,624 in 2002. Redcliff’s census population saw an increase of 225 from 2021, rising from 5,879 to 6,104. The population of Cypress County grew 87 people from 2021 to 2022, totalling 8,088 in 2022. The county’s population grew by a total of 1,736 people, up from 6,352 since 2002. 10
