The population of Saskatchewan has topped 1.2 million people, its government announced last week.

An increase of about 22,000 residents between October 2021 and October 2022 puts the number of people living in Saskatchewan at 1,205,119, according to Statistics Canada.

That included an increase of 10,316 in the third quarter of 2022, the largest three-month increase on record. That growth includes international migration 10,553, a net natural increase (births minus deaths) of 1,261 and out movement to other provinces of 1,498.

Premier Scott Moe said in a statement if the growth rate holds another 200,000 residents would be added by 2030, thereby meeting the government’s growth plan.

Alberta also recorded highest population growth for a three-month period this summer when it added 58,203 residents. Statistics Canada now states Alberta has 4,601,314 residents.

Record snow in Havre

Nearly six inches of new snow at the Havre Airport on Wednesday beat an 84-year-old record specific to the date, the National Weather Service office at Great Falls reported.

Snow depth at the weather station is now 13 inches (33 centimetres) after 5.5 inches were added Dec. 28. That is one-fifth of an inch more than the previous record for daily accumulation dating from 1938.
