New Year’s is a time for celebration for many, but one lucky family will have extra reasons to celebrate as they welcome Medicine Hat’s first baby of 2023. The News wants to make the occasion even more special by sharing the family’s joy with the community, and is asking the family to reach out at their convenience Monday or early Tuesday, as Alberta Health Services has announced it will not be announcing 2023 New Year’s babies. Announcing New Year’s babies had been a long-standing tradition of AHS which the News and many other media outlets share in, as arrival of a new baby brings with it good tidings hoped to continue throughout the year. However, AHS halted the practice in 2021 and has yet to resume, though shared hopes in a Thursday statement of reinstating the practice in 2024. The News hasn’t been deterred however, and has for the past two years connected with family of the local New Year’s baby and continued the tradition of welcoming the little one with a story, recognizing their birth with a free special announcement ad and providing the family a congratulatory gift basket. So if you, or someone you know turns out to be the lucky family, please contact a News reporter by calling 403-527-1101, ext. 109 or emailing newsdesk@medicinehatnews.com.
