The city’s firefighters, dignitaries and the family of Curtis Noble filled the Cypress Centre on Friday for the funeral service for the 41-year-old fire officer who died last week.

Noble, 41, reportedly died of pneumonia on Dec. 16.

He was a former head of the Medicine Hat Firefighters Association, Local 263 of the International Association of Firefighters, and was the vice president of the Alberta Professional Firefighters and Paramedics Association.

The full memorial service including honour guard was officiated by local fire service chaplain Michael Landry.

Municipal, provincial and federal elected officials were in attendance, along with representatives of fire departments throughout the province.

Noble, a 17-year veteran firefighter and Medicine Hat native, spent his career lobbying for greater health and safety protections, and workers compensation recognition for occupational disease and certain types of cancer acquired at higher rates by firefighters.

He also sought greater support for mental health and well-being for emergency responders.

Noble, himself, was open about a leave of absence he took this fall related to post-traumatic stress disorder.

He is survived by three young teenaged daughters and extended family.

Donations in lieu of flowers should be directed to the Margery E. Yuill Cancer Centre, care of the Medicine Hat District Health Foundation, or the Alberta Firefighters Burn Camp, according to his obituary.
