reporter@medicinehatnews.com Tickets are sold out for the Intercultural Gala being held at the Veiner Centre on Saturday. The Connection Intercultural Association has been hosting the event for the past 14 years, which offers an intercultural exchange between locals and international people of Medicine Hat and area. This year 160 people are expected at the event and director Yusuf Mohammed said, “it’s our end-of-year gala celebrating diversity and all the wonderful things that have taken place in integrating newcomers to our community.” A turkey dinner will be part of the main course, but there will also be other flavours from around the world. “The idea is to celebrate the season with people from all over the world,” explained Mohammed. “There are people who have never tried a turkey dinner.” The evening will also feature live music, cultural dances, Christmas music, interactive games and lots of prizes. For some, Christmas might not be the biggest holiday their culture celebrates. During the games there is a chance for others to share about their favourite holidays. Furthering the cultural-exchange aspect of the evening will be both in-person and video presentations. These will revolve around different holidays and traditions and how they are celebrated around the globe. “It is an opportunity for us to get together and celebrate the season and for the connection. We provide so many different events throughout the year and for lots of our volunteers this is an opportunity for them to be appreciated and to come out and meet different people in the community.” added Mohammed. 9
