https://www.medicinehatnews.com@MedicineHatNews The Alberta Liberal Party has appointed interim leader John Roggeveen to lead it into an expected general election campaign in 2023 as the party’s permanent leader. The party made the announcement on Thursday stating its board approved the selection of the Calgary-area lawyer who had been interim leader since March 2021. President Helen McMehomin said Roggeveen’s leadership had “resonated strongly with the board, our members and a growing number of Albertans.” Roggeveen said in a release he was exited to become leader and would help set the party apart from the two major parties, the governing United Conservatives and opposition New Democrats. “Despite the obstacles, there are so many opportunities to make life better for Albertans,” he said. “I’m eager to continue sharing the Alberta Liberal vision for affordability, world-class health care and a prosperous economy.” Roggeveen told the News in October the party would not run a candidate in that month’s Brooks-Medicine Hat byelection, but instead focus resources on the next general election, expected in May 2023. 8
