Elected officials and longtime civic volunteers in the region and across Alberta will receive Queen’s Jubilee medals at ceremonies next weekend through Alberta Municipalities.

The medals, created to celebrate the 70th anniversary of the reign of Queen Elizabeth II this year, denote outstanding service to community and country.

The association that co-ordinates policy and lobbying for Alberta’s cities, towns and village was allotted medals to distribute and chose to present them to all current top-elected local officials, along with about 200 others though a nomination process. That includes Medicine Hat Mayor Linnsie Clark, Redcliff’s Dwight Kilpartrick, Brooks’ John Petrie and Bow Island’s Gordon Reynolds, while former Brooks mayor Barry Morishita will receive a medal as a past president of the association and lobby group.

Among the list of 150 “community builder” recipients are former Cypress MLA and longtime Bow Island town councillor Alan Hyland, Medicine Hat’s Anke Krickhahn, a longtime volunteer driver with Meals on Wheels in the city, and former Redcliff museum manager Vi Rieger.

Other top-elected officials in the region awarded medals will be Robert Blagen (Youngstown), Lorne Buis (Foremost), Raymond Coad (Vauxhall), Jim Depeew (Raymond), Yoko Fujimoto (Rosemary), Arlen Johnston (Empress), Doug Jones (Oyen), Irvin Morev (Bassano), Andrew Prokop (Taber) and Tony Steidel (Duchess).

The medals will be presented at ceremonies in Calgary and Edmonton over the next two weekends.

Rural Municipalities members received medals during that association’s annual general meeting earlier this month. Among the recipients was Cypress County Reeve Dan Hamilton.
