A professional conduct hearing is underway for a Medicine Hat doctor facing criminal accusations of sexual assault.

Dr. Ian Gebhardt is currently facing criminal charges of child sex assault in Ontario dating back to the late 1980s.

In Medicine Hat, he went to trial in 2017 on charges that he asked a developmentally delayed teenaged patient to engage in oral sex during a visit to his office.

The charges were stayed by prosecutors when the lead witness gave contradictory testimony on the stand.

That incident was before a disciplinary hearing convened Tuesday by the Alberta College of Physicians and Surgeons. It is scheduled to last four days.

After the 2017 charges were stayed, Gebhardt continued to see patients in Medicine Hat with a female nurse chaperone in the examination room from mid-2018 until late 2021.

At that time, police in York, Ont. charged him with two counts of sexual interference against children when he lived in that community in 1988 and 1989.

Letters to local patients last year suggested they find a new physician, but his practice reopened in early 2022, advertising it was only accepting new patients older than 16.
