The City of Medicine Hat will purchase a property in the North Flats that remains the only residential home on an otherwise vacant block that is already city property.
The house at 817 Second Street SE sits next to Maple Avenue and across from the Medicine Hat Remand Centre.
It was placed on the market for sale this summer, and on Monday council approved the purchase for $168,000 in order to consolidate it with city holdings on the remainder of the block.
Administrators said they have no immediate plans for the home, though it is suitable either for removal to another site or viable as a rental property, but the city’s land office has long sought to purchase the land.
There is also an abandoned natural gas well on the adjacent property, which would require setback be instituted before any development could proceed, officials with the utilities and infrastructure division stated.
Funding comes from the working capital account of Invest Medicine Hat, which oversees the land department.
