Unemployment in southern Alberta is the lowest in the province, which itself also sits at the national average after years above the Canadian rate.

Jobless figures for August were released on Sept. 9, but new regional analysis from Alberta Labour states the Medicine Hat-Lethbridge region posted a 3.9 per cent unemployment rate last month. That is up one-tenth of a point from earlier in the summer, but a full point lower than the rate in August 2021 (4.9 per cent).

The Alberta rate moved to 5.4 per cent for the month, down from 7.9 per cent one year earlier, equated to about 60,000 fewer unemployed people year-to-year.

Calgary and Edmonton both dropped to 4.9 per cent during the month in the three-month moving average.

Saskatchewan (4.9 per cent) and the other western provinces as well as Quebec (4.5) were below the national unemployment rate while Ontario (5.5) and Maritimes were above.
