kking@medicinehatnews.com Miywasin Friendship Centre is celebrating Alberta Culture Days with a demonstration powwow held Saturday from 1-3 p.m. at the Saamis Tepee. “This is a celebration of culture,” Miywasin cultural co-ordinator Davie James told the News. “It’s an opportunity for the community to (become familiar) with powwow culture. I know it can be intimidating for someone to go to their first powwow, so it’s sort of like a soft introduction.” Powwows are traditional Indigenous gatherings where attendees dance, sing and socialize. James says the demonstration powwow will be smaller in scale than official powwows but will have many of the same features. “There will be drumming circle, different styles of dancing and a vendor or to selling indigenous wares,” said James. “And there will be a food truck up there.” The powwow is free to attend and open to all people. 7
