The fifth annual Little Britches Rodeo is on at Dunmore Equestrian Centre this weekend, from 9 a.m. Saturday and Sunday running to about 5 p.m. Rodeo board member Corrie Schock, says “We are starting with mutton busting, which is always a crowd pleaser.”

Three age groups compete in nine events: peewees are 8 and under, juniors are 12 and under and seniors are 17 and under. The same events are run each day with the same number of contestants.

Peewees compete in pole bending, barrel racing and goat untying. Junior and seniors compete in pole bending, barrel racing, team roping, breakaway roping, steer undecorating and steer riding. Seniors also participate in bull riding and bronc riding.

“This is only the second year we are doing the bronc riding, so we are really excited for that. We use old Calgary Stampede horses that have been retired,” stated Schock.

Dunmore Equestrian is part of the Southern Saskatchewan Little Britches Rodeo Association and its rodeo has the largest contingent of contestants in the circuit.

“We have the most contestants out of all the other rodeos,” explained Schock, “likely due to our proximity to Medicine Hat. We are the only one that does the mutton busting. What has changed in this scenario with Little Britches is now they do the circuit finals at Dunmore.”

Dunmore Equestrian will have buckle presentations for the winners of their rodeo followed by presentations of the final buckles by the Southern Saskatchewan Rodeo Association.

“Sunday is a big day. We finish the rodeo, and we do all the buckle presentations in the arena,” said Schock.

Admission is free and there will be a beer garden and food trucks available both days.
