MHPS issues statement on false stabbing suspect rumour

By MEDICINE HAT NEWS on September 6, 2022.

Medicine Hat Police Service confirmed Monday night that an erroneous report circulating on social media suggesting Myles Sanderson was arrested in Medicine Hat was not true.

The MHPS said in the release that a male was arrested in Medicine Hat, but not connected to Sanderson – who is wanted for first degree murder in connection to the 10 deaths and 18 injuries following a stabbing rampage early Sunday at 13 locations in and around the James Smith Cree Nation and the nearby village of Weldon, northeast of Saskatoon.

A local web broadcaster posted on Facebook a screenshot from a cell phone video of a male being arrested on a highway in Medicine Hat and alleged it was Sanderson being detained, and that the manhunt was over.

“Contrary to an online report circulating, the MHPS has NOT arrested Myles Sanderson, wanted for 1st deg murder in connection to the multiple deaths in SK,” reads the release.

“The male arrested in Medicine Hat was not connected in any way to those offences… MHPS continues to monitor the events in SK and will update the community with timely and accurate information when it is received.”

MHPS released its statement roughly one hour after the erroneous post was made, adding anyone with information relating to the whereabouts of Sanderson should call 911 immediately, and stressing caution that he is considered armed and dangerous and should not be approached.

RCMP announced Monday that Damien Sanderson, brother of Myles, was found dead Monday morning on the James Smith Cree Nation.
