Confirmed cases of COVID-19 doubled in Medicine Hat during the last week of August, a new weekly roundup of figures from Alberta Health states.

A total of 33 cases were positively identified in people with a Medicine Hat or Redcliff address in the six days preceding Aug. 29. That figure, representing only laboratory confirmed cases, is up from 15 in the previous reporting period.

Fatalities the region were unchanged at 101 in the combined Hat-Redcliff area, as well as in Cypress County, where there are currently seven active cases.

Both areas are considered to have a “high” risk of transmission, according to Alberta Health Services.

The trend follows results from waste water testing that evaluates the amount of viral material in the city’s sewage system. It found a steep rise beginning August 8-16, though levels have fallen off by about half since.

Researchers state the readings are valuable in predicting new case levels that tend to lag behind when symptoms develop and cases are identified.

The province of Saskatchewan last released data up to Aug. 13.
