Two 1900-vintage doors are back swinging open at the Cypress Club in Medicine Hat after being restored this summer and re-hung Thursday.

Kirk Yung, of local custom furniture and cabinetry shop Wood Visions delivered and installed the doors – each weighing 150 pounds.

They replaced sheets of plywood that stood-in at the historic brick and sandstone private club that opened in 1903, and which is seeing the Sixth Avenue entrance spruced up this summer.

Trim work was also re-lacquered while the heavy oak doors, measuring nearly eight feet tall and more than two inches thick, were cleaned, then lightly refinished along with the brass hardware.

“They turned out well,” he told the News. “You really don’t want to do too much, especially on something that’s 120 years old.”

Club manager Lorraine Schmaltz was also impressed and is happy to have them back in place.

“It had to be done soon, and they were able to even do the brass,” said Schmaltz. “It’s amazing.”

Work was also done this summer to properly vent storm windows covering the large stained glass window that lightens the staircase in the club. Schmaltz said that work is important to properly protect and preserve the one-and-half-storey tall window arrangement.
