A major Medicine Hat manufacturer is back up producing power after its cogeneration plant was shut down this spring for substantial maintenance.

Cancarb can produce 42 megawatts of electricity through a heat recovery generator first installed at the carbon black facility in the early 2000s.

In April, it was taken off line as scheduled for a routine seven-year maintenance program along with other areas of the plant.

However, the waste-heat unit was kept off line longer than expected after the production facility was brought back online when the company discovered “significant repairs” were required in the steam generator.

Those repairs were completed and the facility recommissioned and began producing power again Aug. 11, the company has told the News in a statement.

The power is sold by long-standing agreement to the City of Medicine Hat’s electricity business.
