Want to learn more about snakes and the different species that live in and around Medicine Hat?
The Interpretive Centre at Police Point Park is holding two talks on snakes. Both talks will be the same, but are holding two in order to accommodate as many people as possible.
Tamara Miller, Park Interpreter, said, “the talk will be around the different species of snakes in the area, and myths about snakes. We want to reach out to those who have a fear around snakes so they can use it as a learning opportunity to help alleviate that fear. Getting to know about snakes is the best way to do that.”
Not only will the anatomy of a snake will be covered, but also their various behaviours. Learn why snakes do the different things they do, such as sticking their tongue out, hissing, and rising off the ground.
Bandit, a female bull snake, will be present at both talks. She is on loan for a few weeks from Fish and Wildlife, who have a permit to keep her. Miller wanted to stress that capturing snakes to keep as pets or harassing them in anyway is illegal.
For most of the presentation, Bandit will remain in her enclosure. At the end of the talk, she will be taken out so participants can see how she moves and interacts.
Each presentation will be an hour and the Interpretive Centre is asking those who are attending to bring a lawn chair, as the presentation will be outside. The talks are at 2 p.m. on Sunday, August 21 with another one scheduled for Friday, August 26 at 7 p.m.
