The Medicine Hat Burns Club is celebrating its 15th anniversary by inviting local community members to share in the annual Robert Burns Celebration dinner beginning at 5:45 p.m. on May 7 at the Medicine Hat Lodge.

The club, which aims to preserve the work of Scottish poet Robert Burns and recognize Scottish culture, usually hosts its annual dinner in January to coincide with Robbie Burns Day, however due to COVID, this year’s event was rescheduled for May.

“We’re bringing in all the full entertainment, which includes the highland dancers and the South Alberta Pipes and Drums band and then presentation pieces done by Burns,” former club president, Ken Montgomery, told the News. “We have some of the members of the Calgary Burns Club Singers coming down from Calgary.”

Several honorary guests will also be in attendance, including Medicine Hat Mayor Linnsie Clark, Lethbridge mayor Blaine Hyggen and president of the Robert Burns World Federation and the Robert Burns Association of North America, Henry Cairney.

Attendees will be treated to a selection of food and drink, such as a traditional Scottish beef dinner, haggis and scotch.

Open to adults only, tickets for the dinner are available online at the Medicine Hat Burn’s Club website. Tickets are $80 each or $600 for a table of eight.

Montgomery encourages anyone interested to purchase their tickets now, as seats are limited.

“I’m amazed at the response we’re getting on this,” said Montgomery. “It’s very significant.”
