The Salvation Army has opted to permanently close the Centre of Hope Shelter following a review of operations at the City of Medicine Hat.

Provision of shelter services continue however, under the leadership of the Mustard Seed, starting April 1.

The Salvation Army announced the news in a Monday release, stating it was made due to an “ever-increasing complexity of shelter operations, and in effort to refine and refocus on missional priorities within the community.”

Mustard Seed Medicine Hat managing director Colette Eirich said the organization is eager to fill the void.

“The Mustard Seed is pleased to assume operations of the emergency shelter from The Salvation Army Centre of Hope,” says Colette Eirich, managing director for Medicine Hat. “We are committed to offering uninterrupted support and services for individuals experiencing homelessness and poverty during this transition.”

Major Jamie Locke, divisional secretary for Public Relations, Alberta & Northern Territories Division, said in the release that the Salvation Army is grateful for the community support the shelter received.

“We remain committed to being a significant support service within Medicine Hat through our ongoing operations at the Community Resource Centre,” said Locke.
