A proposal to build a solar power farm on 3,900-acres of land near Brooks will move to a public regulatory hearing after a group of nearby landowners filed objections. The SolarKrafte Brooks Solar project would be built on five sections of land about 7 km southwest of the city adjacent to Highway 36. Most of the land in the project area is owned by the Eastern Irrigation District and would be leased.

A group of about 20 nearby landowner calling themselves the “Cassilope Group” is represented by Edmonton law firm Akroyd LLP. They filed for intervenor status in the permitting process launched with the Alberta Utilities Commission last March.

This week, the AUC announced a hearing will be held virtually in March.

The facility would have a generating capacity of 300 MW in peak conditions, enough to power 90,000 homes, and cost $500 million to build. It would connect to the AltaLink Cassils Substation and nearby power lines.
