Kathy Glasgo is hoping to be re-elected as a trustee for the Medicine Hat Catholic Board of Education.

Glasgo, a retired teacher of nearly 30 years, has spent much of her professional life in schools. After completing her Bachelors of Education at the University of Lethbridge, she went on to teach social studies and religion. She also worked with students in the special needs program.

Glasgo feels her time as a teacher gave her insight into the needs of students and educators. If re-elected, she has three main objectives, which are to advocate for free menstrual products in schools, improve the safety of student drop-off locations and continue to work on the proposed theatre and arts centre at Monsignor McCoy High School.

The theatre and arts centre at McCoy is a long-term goal, Glasgo told the News. Her other two platform points are more geared toward the near future. Regarding safe drop-off locations, Glasgo says a number of parents have contacted her with concerns over student and vehicle safety.

“I would really like the board to look into a safer way,” she said.

“Another thing that’s really important to me is putting period products in the schools for girls for free,” said Glasgo. “They’re expensive and some kids can’t afford it … I can remember as a high school teacher providing some of that for my own students. Why not have it free for everybody? … It’s just another way to solve poverty in our schools.”

Glasgo is passionate about her platform as she feels it will help elevate the city’s Catholic school system and improve on the experiences of students, educators and parents. She is a lifelong proponent of Catholic education, something she believes makes her a strong candidate for trustee.

“I’ve been a strong advocate and a fighter for Catholic education, and for us to keep our constitutional right (to have a separate school system),” said Glasgo. “As a Catholic teacher, I was able to bring God into different situations. It changes the whole focus of the school … I want to make sure that Catholic education (exists) forever.”
