Fatality inquiry for Chester Hunchak’s killer finally set, more than eight years after their deaths

https://www.medicinehatnews.com@MedicineHatNews The date for a fatality inquiry into events surrounding the 2014 death of Medicine Hat businessman Chester Hunchak has been set for June 2022, according to an update from Alberta Justice. The proceedings will take place more than eight years after Christopher Arkell was shot dead by police at a rural property just south of Medicine Hat in Cypress County. At that time, the body of 67-year-old Hunchak was discovered after a standoff and reports to Medicine Hat police that the well-known former used car dealer was missing. The RCMP has stated they believe Arkell, 50 at the time, was responsible for Hunchak’s death. Such inquiries are common in cases when deadly force is used by police. It can not determine fault, but findings may be used to develop recommendations or prescribe future action. The inquiry will be held at Medicine Hat Provincial Court on June 16/19, 2022, with Judge Kirsten Ailsby, of Lethbridge, presiding. 8-7
