Prairie Rose School Division is working hard, even over the summer, to help improve students and their families’ community connection and mental wellness.
Hosted by the AHS Mental Health Capacity Building Project in co-ordination with the Prairie Rose Wellness Team, the school division is providing opportunities for families to spend time together and within their communities on several Friday’s throughout the summer.
There have been two events so far this summer, one in Ralston and another in Seven Persons.
“There’s family yard games in a community park or community area,” said Greg Godard, school psychologist with PRSD. So they’re going to set up giant Jenga, Yard-zee, ladder ball, tower toss, a bunch of larger yard games, so that families can play together.”
The events are all completely free to the public.
“We hope to bring families together,” said Godard. “Help them have time to connect that is free from screens, to provide community activities to engage them in the community so that they can connect with each other in a community setting.”
Not only does the event focus on family and community, but Godard says they also “try to provide activity packages for families to take home, including breathing activity cards, so there is a bit of a mental health focus as well. There’s questions people can ask each other during the games, so it really is aimed at helping families connect with each other in a larger setting.”
The next MHCB Fun Family Friday is Aug. 6 from 1-3:30 p.m. outside Irvine School.
Other upcoming events include Aug. 13 in Dunmore and Aug. 20 in Elkwater. You can stay updated by visiting their Instagram page @prairierosesd8 or by finding them on Facebook at Prairie Rose Public Schools.
