Riding races taking shape in SW Saskatchewan for Oct. 26 election

By Medicine Hat News on September 30, 2020.

Races are shaping up in southwest Saskatchewan ridings now that the writ has been dropped ahead of the Oct. 26 provincial election.

Closest to the Alberta boundary and Medicine Hat, incumbent Doug Steele (Saskatchewan Party) is defending the Cypress Hills riding seat. He faces Kelly Genert (New Democrat), a trades-person from Maple Creek, and John Gooshen (Progressive Conservative), a farmer from Gull Lake.

To this point, Swift Current shows a two-person contest with Everett Hindley (Sask.) defending the seat against teacher Stefan Rumpel (NDP).

The riding of Kindersley, which borders Cypress Hills at the South Saskatchewan River, north of Leader, is the most crowded at this point.

According to official candidate lists provided by Elections Saskatchewan, former Kindersley mayor and one-term MLA Kenneth Francis (Sask.), faces Evangaline Gordon (Green), a recent federal candidate in Regina, and Terry Sieben (PC), a pub owner from Eatonia.

Unofficially, the NDP party website states the candidate in the riding will be Steven Allan, a former president of the Saskatchewan Teachers Federation.
