The Medicine Hat Public Library is offering free programming online right now to help Hatters learn through the COVID-19 pandemic.

The public library has traditionally offered in-person programming over the years, but has now begun creating online content for people to enjoy.

“We have a YouTube page with videos for people of all ages,” said head of marketing services Gillian Reimer. “We obviously can’t do the same level of programming that we used to do in person, so we moved a lot of it online.

“These videos are a great way for us to continue some of our programming, and people can continue to learn even if they can’t come to the library.”

Every Friday MHPL has a Preschool Story Time posted to its page.

“There’s a couple books ready, some songs and rhymes,” said Reimer. “It’s very similar to the in-person story times we used to do. We just do them online now so everyone can view them.”

Every other Saturday features a STEAM video.

“This is for children and curious adults who want to do science, technology, engineering, art or mathematics projects,” said Reimer. “Usually it’s a hands-on activity and while everyone is working on their project, they learn about the topic.

“This is a fun little learning opportunity.”

The public library is offering craft-to-go kits for adults.

“People can swing by the library and grab a kit, then they can go home and complete it,” said Reimer.

Reimer says the public library plans to continue releasing more content in the future.

“These have been really well received and we definitely are going to keep doing these,” she said. “Even when we start offering in-person learning again, we’d like to keep offering a virtual side.”
