Annual spring – now late summer – highway cleanup set for Saturday

By Medicine Hat News on September 18, 2020.

The annual spring highway cleanup that was delayed by the pandemic will proceed on Saturday, Alberta Transportation is advising motorists.

Local non-profit groups, schools and churches earn $100 per kilometre cleaned as a general fundraiser, picking up litter on highway shoulders and ditches.

Motorists are advised to be cautious when passing volunteers, slow down and abide by all signs in the area.

In 2019, about 18,000 individuals took part across Alberta, cleaning up about 13,700 kilometres of roadway.

That provided $1.28 million for 740 volunteer organizations.

Saturday’s clean up is expected to take place between 7 a.m. and 5 p.m. at various locations.
