As local school boards get ready to return to classes next week, a couple may be without the provincial supplies to start things off.

The Medicine Hat Public School Board confirmed with the News that it had received its shipment of masks and sanitizer on Friday.

The Catholic School Board however, had not gotten its shipment of masks or hand sanitizer by midday Friday.

MHCBE superintendent Dwayne Zarichny says the school has enough supplies to keep classes going.

“We were told that they should be here by the end of the day Friday,” he said. “We weren’t anticipating the government’s order initially, so we had purchased enough masks and sanitizer to get us through the startup.”

Prairie Rose School Division had not received its masks by midday Friday either.

“We’re quite a large school division, so even if the supplies showed up this afternoon, it’s hard to get it to schools,” said communications coordinator Angela Baron. “We’re happy to announce that our county partners have supplied us with masks for students and staff for the first day of classes.

“We’re still good to go for Monday because of this.”

Baron says the school board is asking students with masks at home to bring them to school so the board can make supplies last for as long as possible.

“We’re hoping this stuff shows up as soon as possible,” said Baron. “We have enough for the first day, so if people bring their own masks, maybe we can push that to two days if we need to.”

Baron says the board is hoping the shipment comes this weekend.
