Police in Medicine Hat are explaining their decision not to name a man charged after a sexual assault investigation involving a child in July. A release late Thursday states that several social media posts emanating from the city describe the case which police say is subject to a court-imposed publication ban and involves a minor related to the person charged. The names of alleged sexual assault victims or other identifying factors are often subject to standard publication bans imposed in court proceedings. “Further, due to the evidence and nature of the file, the event did not pose a risk to the general public,” the statement from the Medicine Hat Police Service reads. The investigation was conducted by the Southern Alberta Integrated Child Exploitation unit. The charges were not announced by release when they were laid. 6
