Alberta environment ministry could be altering mule deer hunting rules

By Medicine Hat News on August 14, 2020.

Alberta’s Environment and Parks ministry is looking to update mule deer management plans potentially to alter hunting regulations and allocations in different regions.

A release from the ministry on Wednesday states that the current plan was developed in 1989, and while populations in some areas are declining, there is an over-abundance in others.

“Alberta Environment and Parks has a robust conservation agenda, which includes updating management plans for other species,” Environment Minister Jason Nixon stated in a release.

A new advisory committee will provide input on the updates and make the potential changes known in the spring of 2021 before a new plan is enacted.

That board will include representatives from the Alberta Beef Producers, the Alberta Conservation Association, the Alberta Fish and Game Association, the Alberta Bowhunters Association and outfitting industry groups.

A parallel engagement process with First Nations and Métis groups will also take place, the release states.

Irrigation cash

The St. Mary’s Irrigation District will have the largest allotment from the province’s annual Irrigation Rehabilitation Program fund, it was revealed Thursday.

SMRID will receive $2.65 million from the $10-million fund that was included in the 2020-21 budget announced earlier this year.

The program, in place since 1969, helps pay to modernize water conveyance and more recently pays 75 per cent of the cost of projects to replace canals with pipelines to avoid water loss through evaporation.

According to Thursday’s release from Alberta Agriculture, the Eastern Irrigation District will receive $2.42 million in 2020, the Bow River Irrigation District $1.86 million and Taber Irrigation District $550,000 among districts closest to Medicine Hat.

Eight other districts were awarded funds, including $1.1 million to the Lethbridge Irrigation District.
