Feds, province pitch in $100K for dam safety review in Eastern Irrigation District

By Medicine Hat News on August 6, 2020.

The federal and provincial governments, through the Canadian Agricultural Partnership, are helping the Eastern Irrigation District with up to $100,000 in funding to complete a dam safety review.

The funding will provide the district with information on how to improve safety and reduce the risk of failure, according to a government press release.

The release goes on to state that the review will help improve emergency preparedness capacity of industry and regional authorities. The information will help the district respond effectively to emergencies that have the potential to threaten irrigation infrastructure, negatively impact human or animal health, threaten crops or cause economic loss.

“Albertans rely on water to live, work and play. This dam review is important because it will ensure the best practices are in place now, and for years to come. Irrigation feeds our livestock, waters our crops and provides animal habitats and recreational areas,” Brooks-Medicine Hat MLA Michaela Glasgo said in the release.
