A 31-year-old Medicine Hat man is facing charges of breaching a release order and possession of a prohibited weapon following a report made to a Medicine Hat Police Service foot patrol on Thursday afternoon.

An MHPS release states that two patrol members were approached by a member of the public regarding “open air intravenous drug use” around the 400 block of Fifth Avenue SE.

After locating the group believed to be the people involved, police noticed drug paraphernalia consistent with the complaint and identified one male member of the group as being at large on a warrant for arrest.

The release states the male was searched as an incident to his arrest, and police located a stainless-steel axe, a throwing knife and a prohibited stun gun.

The accused is currently in custody awaiting a bail hearing. Police will not be releasing the name of the accused at this time, as his charges have not yet been sworn.
