A temporary berm constructed at the end of May in a section of Harlow could be removed within weeks.
“We have been monitoring the river flows and weather events through July, and are now looking to resource the removal of the temporary measures. We will likely have a timeline as to when that will occur by early next week,” said Dwight Brown, general manager of municipal works.
The temporary berm was placed in position to protect homes on Finlay Court where the permanent berm in Harlow ends.
Homes on Finlay Court, close to Harris Street where the permanent berm ends, were protected by the temporary berm this spring at a cost of about $22,000.
The city’s plan is to build a permanent berm in this location. This will also facilitate the closing of a current lift station and concealing the pipe inside the berm to another lift station in Harlow.
A number of the 14 homeowners who will be affected by the construction of the permanent berm have expressed concerns about the city’s plan to do this. Council has remained resolute in its decision to go ahead with the berm. Coun. Kris Samraj is the only councillor who voted against the decision.
The permanent berm will be built in the fall. It has not gone to tender yet but is expected to cost about $3.6 million.

More wasteful spending by the city. I can just hear some say, it’s only $22K. Multiply this by all the other departments making poor decisions, and that is the waste this city continues to do, year after year.
