A potential land sale that could result in rerouting an intersection in the city’s southwest was announced at Medicine Hat city council’s meeting on Monday night. The city’s Invest Medicine Hat office, which includes the land department, also brought forward a bylaw to close a portion of 13th Street SW, which borders the Cook Southland Funeral Home, and would be acquired then turned into additional parking. The road allowance, at 901 13th St. SW, is essentially an on-ramp to a complex intersection that separates a greenspace, Redcliff Drive, access to Gershaw Drive and the funeral home. Analysis provided by Invest managers states the business has been in place for 30 years and would like off-street parking to help accommodate its operation. The road closure, a legal process to denote it is no longer required for municipal transport plan, was initiated on Monday with first reading. No details of the sale, including the purchase price, were made public though a briefing note states all legal costs are the responsibility of Cooks. In the previous version, the location was described as being near “Red Deer Drive” when, in fact, the location is near “Redcliff Drive” in proximity to Medicine Hat’s southwest industrial area.) 8
‘Complex intersection’ is a metaphor used to describe several boneheaded road designs that encompass this city.
