While many were left without plans on Canada Day, Kat Moon was opening a new business downtown.
The new space, The Kommon, is located on Third Street and was created to be a community hub for health-focused people.
“We’re putting a really big focus on health and art,” said Moon, the creative visionary behind the space. “We want this to be the place where people can come together to co-create.
“We want people to be able to co-create more sustainability, better health and more resources for our community.
“We’re putting a really big emphasis on our community.”
The Kommon sells a number of different nutritional products and houses a small kitchen where people can buy something to eat. The kitchen sells a wide range of healthy warm and cold drinks. The space also plays host to food-based classes.
Another big part of The Kommon is the Body Movement Studio.
“This is a diverse and inclusive space,” said Moon. “We want a place where people can come, at any experience level, and feel comfortable.
“This is a space for people to move freely, feel connected to themselves, have a sense of community and work toward their health goals.”
The studio is offering yoga and dance classes now. Moon says Tai chi, Taekwondo, martial arts and anything else that inspires free movement will be added. She says art classes will be offered as well.
Moon has lived in the Hat for more than five years and says a space like this has been her goal for a while.
“I’ve wanted to have a place like this to help people reach their health goals,” she said. “Everyone here is on the same page – we want to get to know people on a deeper level.”
Moon says she is optimistic about the direction downtown is going.
“I love it down here,” she said. “It’s so beautiful downtown and I really believe in the potential that exists down here.
“There’s been a lot of growth downtown recently and I hope it can continue.”
People can find specific classes on the MindBody app and can message The Kommon on all forms of social media to learn more. It is located at 622 Third Street SE.
