Sue Bowers has taken her love for painting rocks and is using it to do good in her community.
The Redcliff resident has teamed up with the Southern Alberta Humane Society for the Gnomes Need Homes fundraiser.
Bowers is taking requests to paint rocks like gnomes, and people donate to the humane society based off the size of the rock.
“Painting rocks gives you a lot of time to think,” said Bowers. “I had been talking with a friend about the Southern Alberta Humane Society and she was expressing a need for funding.
“I started thinking about these gnomes I had and that I needed to find them homes. Just like the animals need homes.”
Bowers runs a Facebook page, where she has documented her journey of painting 2,020 rocks this year – a goal she has already completed. She says the hobby has given her something to do during the pandemic.
“I’ve been keeping busy,” she said. “This has been a great way to spend my time this year.
“It allows me to be creative and to continue to work toward something.”
The artist says she has been amazed by the request for gnome rocks and she is working to get orders done quickly.
Bowers goes out daily to a number of different locations in and around Redcliff to search for good rocks to paint and transform into gnomes.
A rock up to four inches big is a donation of $7 to the humane society. A rock four to six and a half inches is a $10 minimum donation. A rock up to nine inches is a $15 minimum donation.
Bowers says she is easiest to reach on Facebook in the 2020 Redcliff Rocks group. She can also be reached at 403-580-9435.
