No one is quite sure exactly when organized sports will return, but when it does the Medicine Hat News will be ready.
Ryan McCracken has been a fixture in the local sports community since he started at the News in 2014, and the editorial board is extremely pleased to announce his recent promotion to the sports editor position.
His passion for the world of sports – a lifetime fan of hockey and baseball in particular – led him to pursue a career in the media, which eventually brought him from his home province of Ontario to Alberta.
He worked at the St. Paul Journal for two years before taking on his first daily newspaper role in the News sports department. Six years later, McCracken has built strong, trustworthy relationships within the community, and with the teams and players he has covered.
McCracken has big plans for the future of sports coverage.
“I’m thrilled to take on this new opportunity as sports editor with the Medicine Hat News,” he says. “I know our role in the community will be paramount when sports inevitably return – especially if teams are forced to play without fans. As such, I hope to innovate our approach to coverage alongside the ever-changing landscapes of both the sports and media industries while ensuring our readers are up to date on what’s happening in our diverse sports community.”
Publisher Kerri Sandford is looking ahead to a new innovative approach to sports and local coverage that McCracken will bring to the newsroom.
“Ryan brings a high degree of professionalism, and a strong journalistic skill set that we have no doubt will further enhance our readers’ news experience,” she says.
