Local anti-racism rallies are planned to take place in southeast Alberta later this week. Protests have gripped the United States for close to a week as calls for better race relations and an end to police brutality follow video of an in-custody death of a black man in Minnesota. Social media posts are calling for Hatters to join together “peacefully protesting in honour” at 4 p.m. on Friday at Medicine Hat city hall plaza while observing health restrictions and calls for physical distancing. A similar event in Brooks is scheduled on Sunday beginning at 11 a.m., in a march from the McDonald’s location on Second Street W to city hall. 5
Do such protests help in any way? The problem remains as it was and it is difficult to say that the problem of racism can be taken and solved in a couple of days or in a few years. This is much deeper and all social classes, from children to retirees, will always discuss this and talk about how racism affects their lives.
