MHC extends health care aide program in curriculum change

A new curriculum has been introduced for the health care aide program at Medicine Hat College, extending the length of the certificate program to eight months while adding a distributed learning option. The program is offered at both the Medicine Hat and Brooks campuses and combines learning in the classroom and laboratory, as well as clinical placements. “It’s important that students be exposed to a variety of different experiences through their time in the program,” MHC health and human services chair Torill Hutchinson says in Tuesday press release. “Therefore we ensure that their clinical placement hours are spent within a number of different environments.” Starting in January, students will also be able to obtain their health care aide certificate through distributed learning – a blend of online and in-person education. “The theory portions of the courses will occur online, whereas the lab portions will occur on weekends or times that are scheduled with plenty of advanced notice,” nursing department chair Sandy Fritz says in the release. “The format is designed to give students the flexibility they need to achieve their learning outcomes and earn their certificate in a way that works with their schedule.” 6-5
