Wednesday’s COVID-19 update: Brooks adds 140 cases, Medicine Hat two

Another 140 cases of COVID-19 were reported in Brooks Wednesday by Alberta Health, while there are two more in Medicine Hat.

Of Alberta’s 315 new cases within the past 24 hours, nearly half of them are in Brooks, though only 27 were reported from the JBS meat packing plant there.

Brooks now has 763 total cases, including 31 recovered and four deaths. Fifteen of the recovered cases were reported Wednesday.

Medicine Hat has 27 cases and 13 recovered (two more than Tuesday).

Province-wide there were seven new deaths announced, six of them at one continuing care centre in Calgary. The total death toll in the province due to the new coronavirus is now 87, while there are 5,165 total cases.

Chief medical officer of health Dr. Deena Hinshaw announced new public health orders affecting continuing care facilities. Those facilities are now mandated to test and isolate anyone with mild COVID-like symptoms, while a positive test will now trigger mandatory testing throughout a facility.

Staff caring for isolated patients at continuing care facilities must now wear eye protection as well as facemasks and other personal protective equipment. They can’t work at multiple facilties. Long-term care facilities are also now able to arrange outdoor visits for residents in isolation and their families.
