Two deaths including one at a continuing care facility in Brooks were reported as part of Tuesday’s COVID-19 Alberta update.

Alberta Health confirmed that an individual at AgeCare Sunrise Gardens in Brooks was among the five new deaths attributed to the coronavirus. A total of 80 people in the province have died due to COVID-19.

Of the 154 new cases announced provincially, 42 are in Brooks but none in Medicine Hat. Brooks now has 623 cases, with 249 of those among employees and contractors at the JBS meat packing plant.

The south zone as a whole now has a higher rate of COVID-19 cases than Calgary, though 90 per cent of the zone’s 685 cases are in Brooks.

Premier Jason Kenney said the province will announce its relaunch strategy “later this week,” noting in response to a question that some aspects of the relaunch could take effect within two weeks.

“Alberta’s government is working around the clock on a phased approach to relaunch our economy,” said Kenney. “There is light ahead.”

Kennedy predicated talk of a relaunch plan by noting new modelling numbers see an estimate of 596 concurrent hospitalizations at the peak, down from earlier forecasts of 818.

“The trends continue to be encouraging,” he noted.
