Teens arrested in street race that pushed them 60 km/h over the limit

By Medicine Hat News on April 1, 2020.

Police arrested two teenagers for exceeding the speed limit by nearly 60 kilometres an hour while drag racing Monday night.

The incident occurred around 11 p.m. on Parkview Drive, where they were driving 128 km/h in a 70 km/h speed zone.

The males, ages 16 and 17, have been charged with a Traffic Safety Act violation and will appear in front of a judge “at a later date,” according to a Medicine Hat Police Service news release.

Traffic Staff Sgt. Gerald Sadlemyer tells the News they must appear before a judge to determine their fine because they exceeded the speed limit by more than 50 km/h.

He said the MHPS hands out a handful of tickets for racing annually and it isn’t a major issue in the community, but that doesn’t make it less dangerous.

Racing isn’t limited to young, inexperienced drivers. Police recently ticketed a 60-year-old man for driving far in excess of the speed limit on Dunmore Road, Sadlemyer said.

“I’m not going to label this all on the youth,” he said. “We seem to have a few folks who unfortunately in this time of turbulence we’re living in right now taking it upon themselves to disregard road safety, and the safety of motorists, pedestrians and children.”
