Chris Christie, executive director of Community Foundation of Southeastern Alberta, has been appointed to the Premier’s Council on Charities and Civil Society.
The council will work to strengthen community organizations working to address social challenges. Their first task is to advise on civil society’s response to COVID-19. They will consult with organizations to see how government can help build capacity to address social issues, advise government and develop a framework for government’s partnership with civil society.
“Our council is already providing innovative, practical and effective recommendations to a very receptive provincial government,” said Christie. “More than ever, our communities need a strong, not-for-profit sector – who are providing crucial boots-on-the-ground supports through this crisis”.
The council is comprised of 15 individuals from across the province. Jeremy Nixon, MLA for Calgary-Klein, will serve as a council member and the Parliamentary Secretary to the Minister of Community and Social Services.
Rajan Sawhney, minister of community and social services, said in a statement, that non-profit groups and charities understand the needs in their communities. One of the first tasks will be to respond to COVID-19. The longer objective is to improve the vibrancy and longevity in the civil society sector.
