A family dance meant to celebrate 15 years of community service to youth and families was cancelled on Thursday due to new prohibitions meant to battle the coronavirus.

That afternoon the provincial health authorities announced that it recommended that any large gathering of people be cancelled as a way to decrease the potential spread of the disease.

McMan Parent Link had planned to hold a “Farewell Fling” family dance at Southview Community School to bring together past and present staff and clients for an event before the group’s contract expires at the end of March.

The centre, located at the school, is still slated to deliver services, such as drop-in playtime, assessments and early childhood intervention services until then.

Last November, the province announced it would cancel 450 grants, totalling $77 million, with 300 Parent Link groups across the province and would institute a new system, based on community networks, in April 2020.

Proposals for service delivery were due in mid-February, and the results of scheduled negotiation with successful bidders are to be concluded on March 20.
