Local musician Kyle Church was one of 1,200 artists to submit music to this year’s Searchlight contest hosted by CBC.

Church found out recently that he made the top 100 in the contest and is asking for the support of his city to help him make the top 10.

“A friend had tagged me in a post about this contest and I just decided to give it a go and submit my song,” he said. “I found out on Wednesday that I had made it into the top 100 for the fan voting.

“Of the top 100, 50 were from the top vote getters. The other 50 were picked by a panel.”

Seven of the top-10 songs will be selected by judges. Three will be decided by fan voting. Voting is on now for the top 10.

Church submitted his song ‘Good Life’ to the contest, which he recorded a couple years ago at Stir Studio in the Hat.

“The song is exactly what it sounds like,” said Church. “It’s all about enjoying life. It’s a song about gratitude and being thankful to be alive.

“I think we sometimes overlook the simple miracle that is being alive – the song is just about enjoying the little things.”

Church has lived in the Hat since 2006. He is 24 years old and hopes to continue with music as a career.

“I’m trying to see how far I can go with music – it’s a passion of mine,” he said. “I didn’t know what to expect when I first entered, but I know winning this would be huge for my career.

“This would really present great opportunities for me.”

Church says he is thankful for all of the support.

“I think being in the top 100 is a testament to how supportive everyone has been,” he said. “There’s no way I could have done with without everyone’s support.”

Church’s music can be found on all streaming platforms by searching his name.
