Council briefs: New lease for air traffic controllers

By Medicine Hat News on February 5, 2020.

The city is prepared to offer a new, ten-year lease to accommodate air traffic controllers at the Medicine Hat Regional Airport after council approved the outline of a general agreement on Monday.

NAV Canada is a federal crown corporation that recovers its costs from fees on airlines. Since 1983, it has leased office space and portions of the control tower, totalling 2,500-square-feet, in Medicine Hat where it controls flight traffic.

A new lease would be worth $105,000 in the first year. Increases of two per cent would follow in years two and five, and the agreement would be reviewed in year six. The agreement includes utilities and access to eight parking spaces.

Tax training

Medicine Hat will support an effort to develop an “on the job” training program for municipal tax assessors, but will have to await a feasibility study to determine local impact.

Council approved formally supporting a system that could see those studying the practise work the equivalent of practicum terms with municipalities. No such training currently exists for those looking to become certified assessors.

The program is being spearheaded by the City of Lethbridge, and has the support of 12 other municipalities and the Alberta, including Calgary and Edmonton, Cypress County and others along with the Alberta Assessors Association.

Creating a feasibility study would cost about $200,000, which would be funded by a grant application to the Alberta Community Partnership-Intermunicipal Collaboration program.
