SaskPower is looking for volunteers to have automated power meters installed on their homes or businesses. The provincial Crown corporation is re-introducing the systems that remotely monitor utility usage and broadcast readings back to centralized computers for billing. The agency removed 105,000 smart meters from use in 2014 after concerns arose about a number of fires throughout the province that year. At the same time the City of Medicine Hat utility officials said they were monitoring so-called “hot socket” problems but continued with the changeover of all local power, gas and water meters. SaskPower says the meters lead to more accurate readings, help determine power needs and scheduling, as well as avoid the need for meter readers. About 8,000 smart meters were installed at Saskatchewan businesses during a pilot project in 2017. The agency hopes to have 30,000 in place by the end of 2020. 7
