One arrested after domestic standoff in Crescent Heights

NEWS PHOTO MO CRANKER One man has been arrested by police after a domestic standoff that lasted all night.

One man is in custody after a domestic standoff in northwest Crescent Heights.

Police were called to the scene around 4 p.m. at the 700 block of 12 St. NW and officers were able to determine there was a man inside breaching court order and refusing to speak with police.

Police then learned that a woman was inside who was being unlawfully confined – the man barricaded the residence once police arrived.

“It was a really busy day for police today,” said Insp. Brent Secondiak. “It’s always extremely concerning for police when someone is barricaded inside – especially when there’s someone being held against their will with them.

“We looked at this as an extremely dangerous right from the start.”

Members of the MHPS tactical team, crisis negotiators Team, K9 unit and the incident command took control of the situation and attempted negotiations.

Secondiak says the accused, a 27-year-old from Regina, refused to answer the door, making negotiations difficult for those in charge.

“They’re trained professionals and they’re looking at the mood, level of intoxication and the risk of harm,” he said. “There was conversation for a few hours with the accused, but we eventually had to determine that they were unsuccessful and that it was time to go in.”

Secondiak confirmed that no one was injured in the standoff and that the officers made a clean arrest after working their way into the apartment unit.

“I don’t know exact specifics but there was a number of items blocking the door,” he said. “I think they entered the unit through both (the door and a window) – they always go for multiple points of entry. “We’re thankful that we can report no injuries at any point of this one.”

Police are still working to determine the relationship between the man and the woman, but he said there was no way for the woman to safely leave the unit.

“It’s not that she was tied to a chair and couldn’t physically leave,” he said. “It’s more that she wasn’t allowed to leave the place due to threats of physical harm.”

Secondiak confirmed alcohol played a factor into the situation and that there was no weapons being used by the accused.

Police are thanking the public for avoiding the area during the altercation. Secondiak also praised police for working as a team and getting the job done.

“This was textbook, for sure,” he said. “This was done very cleanly and it goes to show how much experience we have on our staff within these units. “We have someone in custody, there was little property damage and there was no injuries – a great job overall.”

Information on the accused will not be released until charges are sworn in front of a justice of the peace.
